InterXstream is now offering Backup E-mail Servers for those clients who wish to have redundant e-mail services.

So how does it work?

We provide 3 additional servers for e-mail backup. We modify your DNS setup for you so there is nothing that you need to do on your end. Once we have your dns set up properly, if one e-mail server goes down, the second automatically takes over. The second server holds the mail in its que until the main e-mail server is back online. Once it is online, the backup server will automatically deliver the mail to your main mail server. This way, no e-mail is ever lost.

The e-mail backup servers work for the entire domain and any e-mail address that fall under that domain.

The three backup servers are kept in 3 different datacenters across the US to ensure that if one is down the other will not.

So lets see the path of an e-mail if your main e-mail server is down:

1. Your user sends you and e-mail.
2. Your main e-mail server is down
3. Due to the DNS Setup, your e-mail is automatically sent to backup server 1.
4. Backup server 1 receives the e-mail and holds it in its mail que.
5. Backup server 1 checks every 3 minutes to see if your main mail server is online
6. Once the server is back online, your backup server deliverers the mail.
